Strengthen the academic eco-system for social entrepreneurship as a catalyst to job creation and social and economic change

Ongoing

Against a backdrop of unsustainable inequality and a rising unemployment rate, social enterprises (SEs) are emerging as a solution to catalyse social and economic growth, especially in rural and underserved areas. SEs are set up in response to market failures in communities, delivering innovative solutions to often stuck social and environmental challenges.Academically, in South Africa, the field remains small, isolated to business schools, with little available for undergraduate teaching and no support structures to encourage academics to cross over into the field. Building on the work by and for the Government of Flanders, this project proposes to build the base of social entrepreneurship education and research in South Africa. It aims to realize both an increase and improvement in the South African specific academic research and teaching on social enterprise through capacity building. It proposes a colloquium to bring academics together to frame and co-ordinate a research agenda, and an online network to keep these academics connected. It provides support to stimulate teaching social entrepreneurship, developing an open source teaching curriculum, teaching case and journal writing support and a peer-reviewed textbook to enable teaching across the country.
