Microsatellite Instability in Colorectal Cancer: Foundation of Precision Medicine in Three sub-Saharan African Countries

Ongoing

In sub-Saharan Africa, the practice of molecular and genetic testing, in the aim of precision diagnostic and management is still limited. The current diagnosis techniques do not provide the best outcomes for the patients and thus hinder the human capital quest to reach its full potential in order to effectively contribute to the continent’s development. This project aims to introduce and lay the foundation, in Rwanda, of conducting molecular and genetic testing in cancer in order to personalize management and therefore improve health outcomes and reduce unnecessary costs. Therefore, the local laboratory scientists and researchers will study the Microsatellite Instability (MSI) status of colorectal cancer, not only in Rwanda, but also from Cameroon and DRC. This will lead to the formation and progressive expansion of an African database of MSI status, and ultimately to precise management guidance for a better life.
