Practical implementation of adsorption technologies for water treatment in Peru


Increasing areas in Peru are affected by mining activities and associated pollution through heavy metals and other toxic substances. The severe negative effects on the health of local populations and the surrounding environment are proven scientifically. The authorities recognize the risk, as in the Hualgayoc-Bambamarca region where a state of national emergency has been declared. However, no effective measures were taken to date, leading to continued pollution and social unrest. Often the reasons for inaction are a lack of funding and know-how. This project will first identify the main pollution pathways and then provide reliable, low-cost and easy-to-use technologies to treat drinking and irrigation water in order to avoid accumulation in the food chain. In a collaboration between UNC and UGent, novel and reliable technologies such as modified adsorbents and constructed wetlands will be adapted to local circumstances and needs. With awareness raising work and knowledge dissemination by the NGOs Grufides and ESF, these technologies will empower local communities to safeguard their health and environment.
