Assessment of urban flood hazard in Hanoi under current and future climate conditions
OngoingWith the increase in urbanization, the drainage system in Hanoi now is under the threat of overload. Urban inundations not only cause losses to economy and human lives but also generate environmental problems. The situation becomes more severe under the impact of climate change, which is predicted to cause more extreme storm events. In this proposed project, we will develop an integrated surface water modelling system that enables the assessment of urban flood inundation in Hanoi under the current condition and different future climate change scenarios. We moreover will investigate different measures to reduce the urban flood related climate change impacts. Particularly, a simplified conceptual model for the hydrodynamic modelling in the drainage systems and rivers will be developed to deal with the problem of huge computational time of physically-based models. This simplified modelling approach allows us to quantify climate change impacts and model related impact uncertainties. It also allows to obtain optimal water management solutions. This research will involve a co-design process together with the local Hanoi authorities in support to urban flood planning and management.
