Food security for smallholder farmers in S.P. of Rwanda through the development of an integrated sustainable agriculture model

Ongoing

In the Southern Province of Rwanda up to date techniques of sustainable agriculture are not implemented due to a lack of knowledge by farmers. The current production techniques don’t guarantee sufficient food and feed production and result in a decline of the soil fertility. By strengthening the capacity of the University of Rwanda (CAVM = College of Agriculture, Animal Sciences and Veterinary Medicine) and through a strong local partnership, an integrated sustainable agriculture model will be developed and implemented in 4 districts on 4 selected demonstration sites. It takes into account the identified 3 priorities of the local NGO’s to be tackled in their transformation towards a more sustainable agricultural model: (1) Availability and quality of seeds (in particular maize, soybean and disease-resistant varieties of cassava); (2) Soil fertility with emphasis on an analysis-based approach, rational rotations, legumes, fodder trees and prevention of erosion; (3) Feeding of dairy cows with newly introduced methods of forage production and conservation. This will contribute to food security for the beneficiary farmers.
