Eco-friendly multidisciplinary approaches for controlling and harnessing Marabú (Dichrostachys cinerea) in central eastern Cuba

Ongoing

Marabú (Dichrostachys cinerea) is a very aggressive invasive woody plant that has invaded vast areas of agricultural land, and is considered one of the most important threats to agriculture in Cuba. This project has the general objective to improve farmers’ livelihood and food sovereignty in Central-Eastern Cuba, by developing strategies to control invasion of land by Marabú. More specifically, the project will increase the research capacity of UCIAL and ULT in the field of soil fertility, soil quality and animal nutrition and develop practical (but science-based) strategies for eco-friendly control and utilization of Marabú, in collaboration with UCLV. This will be achieved, amongst others, by two PhD sandwich scholarships and 2 local MSc, by investments in research infrastructure of both the soil and animal nutrition labs at UCIAL, and by on-farm field experiments in the area. Intensive exchange and collaboration with governmental and NGO stakeholders is foreseen to maximize the impact of the project.
